Anatomy of 3D mitochondria : Mitochondria are membrane-bound organelles found in the cells of almost all plants, animals, fungi, and other eukaryotic organisms. They are widely known as the "powerhouses of the cell" because they produce most of the energy required for cellular activities. This energy is generated in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through the process of cellular respiration, in which nutrients such as glucose are broken down using oxygen. Mitochondria have a unique structure consisting of an outer membrane, a highly folded inner membrane called cristae, and an internal fluid-filled matrix. The folds of the inner membrane increase the surface area available for energy-producing reactions, making ATP production more efficient. Mitochondria contain their own DNA and ribosomes, allowing them to produce some of their own proteins and replicate independently within the cell. Scientists believe that mitochondria originated from ancient bacteria that formed a symbiotic relationship with early eukaryotic cells, a concept known as the endosymbiotic theory. In addition to energy production, mitochondria play important roles in regulating cell growth, cell signaling, calcium storage, heat production, and programmed cell death (apoptosis). The number of mitochondria in a cell varies depending on its energy requirements, with highly active cells such as muscle and liver cells containing large numbers of mitochondria. Overall, mitochondria are essential organelles that support the survival, growth, and proper functioning of living cells by supplying the energy needed for nearly all biological processes.
